Effective from

Completes
5 January 2026
Who is affected
Organizations that configured custom roles for member management/visibility in Google Groups, common in delegated or team-managed group setups.
Admin roles to involve: Google Workspace super admin, Groups admin
What administrators should do
Review groups that use custom roles for "Who can manage members" or "Who can view members," or that set "Who can manage members" to Entire organization, and move those users to standard roles (owners/managers) or a supported audience. From September 15, 2025 you can no longer add these custom-role configurations; on January 5, 2026 existing custom roles stop applying and "Entire organization" for viewing members converts to "all members."
What happens if this is ignored
On January 5, 2026 affected custom roles silently stop applying, which can change who can manage or view group membership without warning.
