Project Online retires on September 30, 2026

Who is affected

Organizations using Project Online and Project Web App (PWA) for project portfolio management. This retirement does not by itself retire Project desktop, Project Server Subscription Edition or Planner. Project desktop connections that rely on Project Online stop functioning when the service retires.

What administrators should do

1) Inventory Project Web App (PWA) instances, connected project sites, required projects, configuration, workflows, reports, integrations and permissions; assign accountable owners. 2) Separate Project Online service data and dependencies from ordinary SharePoint content; decide what to retain, migrate, replace or retire. 3) Match destinations to required capabilities. Microsoft's options include Planner, Project Server Subscription Edition, Dynamics 365 Project Operations and standalone Project desktop; none is a universal one-to-one replacement. 4) Export or migrate required information and preserve necessary history and retention evidence. 5) Validate project data, permissions, reports, integrations, direct SharePoint content access and business processes. Export alone does not complete a migration. 6) Complete the transition and validation before September 30, 2026. New Project Online tenants and functional new PWA instances have been unavailable since April 1, 2026; a SharePoint template or PWA-looking URL does not provision the service.

What happens if this is ignored

Project Online service-backed functionality and access to data in that service become unavailable after September 30, 2026. SharePoint content without Project Online dependencies can have a separate lifecycle, subject to permissions, retention and tenant configuration; validate direct access rather than assuming the entire site disappears or continues working.
