What administrators should do
Skype for Business Server 2015 and 2019 are out of support: since October 14, 2025 they receive no security fixes or technical support, so do not leave them running indefinitely. Move on-premises IM, presence and voice to a supported path that fits your requirements. Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business Server Subscription Edition are different paths, not equivalents. Subscription Edition has been available since July 1, 2025 and is in support under Microsoft's Modern Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft documents it as an in-place upgrade of Skype for Business Server 2019; review Microsoft's prerequisites and test the upgrade before relying on it, and plan 2015 deployments separately.
What happens if this is ignored
The servers keep running but receive no security updates, leaving voice and messaging infrastructure exposed to unpatched vulnerabilities.
